Tourism Sector Post Pandemic!

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to sudden stop in travel and a collapse in economic activity across the world due to significant travel restrictions amid great uncertainty. Tourism has been one of the most affected sectors, particularly across the Asia-Pacific and Western Hemisphere countries.

Tourism industry accounts for more than 10% of the global economy and in many countries, a large share of exports and foreign exchange earnings has had a tremendous impact due to restrictions in foreign trade. The pandemic has had severe repercussions on the tourism industry, putting millions of tourism jobs at risk. Migrant workers, particularly women and youth, have suffered disproportionately from diminished employment opportunities. As per United Nations World Tourism Organization, due to Covid pandemic, tourist arrivals are estimated to have fallen up to 74 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.

A recovery to this sector can only be expected post vaccine roll-out and revised travel policy implementations. Some governments have started providing financial support, either directly or through soft loans and guarantees to aid revival of this sector. Thailand has allocated $700 million towards domestic tourism. Countries have also been assisting key industry players to adapt their business models and retrain staff. The government in Jamaica provided free online training certification session to tourism workers to help improve their skills.

As per World Travel & Tourism Council, more than 100 million jobs could return to the Travel & Tourism sector as the world recovers from the pandemic with many major travel companies reporting a significant rise in bookings. There has been a steady shift toward ecotourism, an industry focusing on conservation and local job creation which could further give an additional boost to the industry. For instance, country like Thailand has been trying to shift to niche markets like adventure travel and health and wellness tours to boost tourism.

Change in tourist preferences or economic scarring, may lead tourism-dependent countries to embark on a long and compelling journey to diversify their economies. The pace and scope of recovery of tourism sector will differ from country to country and global developments. Close coordination among sectors like aviation, hospitality, insurance shall be required to boost the tourism sector and a crucial opportunity for revival from survival.. Apart from mitigating the impact of the pandemic, countries will have to diversify and shift towards more sustainable tourism models through investing in new technologies to create a “new normal” for the tourism industry.
